It is being reported that retailers Kmart and Bunnings will be investigated for using facial recognition technology on customers in some of their stores.1 The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) will consider whether the practice is consistent with the nation’s exisiting privacy laws.
This Absolutely necessary. Self-regulation has NEVER worked when it comes to these sorts of technologies. Some might argue that the EU goes too far sometimes but at least they lay out some boundaries, which is far better than none at all. And the problem is that once tech companies get some momentum up, it’s very hard to put the cat back in the bag.2
